Information about Church Farm

Laurence J Betts Ltd ~ Founded in 1901 is now run by the 4th Generation of the Betts family, Stephen and Ian.

In 1930 vegetable growing started, slowly replacing the Hops which had been on the farm for over 200 years at Offham, West Malling Kent.

Breeding of pedigree dairy cows, pigs and sheep were also added to the farming enterprise when Stewart Betts joined the business in 1945.

The last of the breeding stopped in 1980 as LJ Betts decided to concentrate their efforts on the vegetable and salad production.

Lettuce has steadily increased from 20 acres in 1970 to 700 acres today with a further 400 acres of wheat in the rotation.

The production of lettuce now extends to all the major types plus a few not so common continental types of lettuce. In 2007 Wild Rocket was added to the portfolio.

The company has a policy of investing in the very latest technology to remain at the forefront of crop production.

We are full members of the Assured Produce Scheme and are annually audited by Checkmate International Plc. to EUROGAP standards, membership no: 4005 and to the Assured Combinable Crops Scheme Standards, membership no: 11327. We also have Exempted Trader Status Registration no: F60337.

We are most grateful to The Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group, FWAG, who recently completed an in depth "Whole Farm Environmental Plan" and also to the RSPB who conducted a Farm Bird Survey.
